Background:

Welcome to the millennial edition of our catalog of geriatric educational materials developed through the support of the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City. As in previous years we are presenting some of the most innovative educational resources available for improving geriatric training in family medicine and internal medicine residency programs. It is our hope that these products will be useful for:

  • Providing innovations and ideas to make your own educational efforts in geriatrics more exciting and relevant to residents, perhaps stimulating you to develop even better resources.
  • Addressing the explicit requirements of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education for expanded geriatric content in residency programs, including long-term care, ambulatory continuity of care, and end-of-life decision-making.
  • Assisting in the successful recruitment of talented residents from the ever-increasing pool of medical school graduates who demand a strong geriatric education program in their residency training.

In this catalog you will find products and ideas that cover the entire spectrum of educational needs including field-tested curriculum manuals, faculty development programs, consultation programs, and teaching aids.

The resources grew out of and initiative funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation. Members of the consortium include the American Academy of Family Physicians and eight academic medical centers: Baylor College of Medicine, Harvard University, Johns Hopkins University, Stanford University, University of California - Los Angeles, University of Chicago, University of Connecticut, and the University of Rochester.
Products developed by these sites have been shared at national meetings and evaluated by end users.

Products are distributed by Stanford University Geriatric Education Resource Center. All proceeds are used to cover the cost of producing and disseminating these materials, and to advance our educational mission: assisting medical residents in improving the care of older persons.

All of us involved in this effort sincerely hope that you will find these products useful in enhancing the abilities of your faculty and trainees in graduate medical education to gain the all-important geriatric perspective. Our ultimate goal is to improve the quality of health care for older persons in the next century.
